India regain top spot in ICC Test rankings as England topple South Africa
Team India climbed to number one spot in the ICC Test rankings following South Africa's loss to England in the third Test at Johannesburg on Saturday.
England swept to a series-clinching victory over top-ranked South Africa on the third day of the Test at the Wanderers Stadium to take a winning 2-0 lead.
England pacer Stuart Broad produced a sensational display of fast bowling as the visitors toppled South Africa from top spot on the ICC Test rankings.
Broad took six for 17 as South Africa were bowled out for 83 in their second innings. England won by seven wickets.
India, who lost their top ranking to England after their 0-4 whitewash in 2011, got back to the pinnacle by virtue of their crushing 3-0 series win against the Proteas at home, last December.
India now have 110 ranking points and have one point more than Australia, who are second in the list with 109 points in their kitty. South Africa are now third in the rankings.
The joy of reaching top spot for India can be shortlived if Australia win their home Test series against New Zealand by 1-0 margin as the Aussies will then displace Kohli and Co. from the numero uno position.
South Africa have not won a Test match for more than a year with their last victory coming against the lowly West Indies.
South Africa needed to either draw or win the four-Test series to retain the No. 1 position.
Even if the Proteas beat England in the fourth Test at the Centurion, they would not improve from their third position.
In the event of South Africa losing the final Test, they will slip to fourth spot.
The fresh Test rankings will be released by the ICC after the conclusion of the South Africa vs England Test series.
