Raipur has raised hockey's hopes for Rio, says Manpreet Singh

2:49 AM Rajsamand Blog 0 Comments

He can replace the might of Sardar Singh in central field and also flick it into the net if needed. The midfield of a hockey park is where Manpreet Singh has erected villas, and it has established 'Korean' as one of the key figures of Indian hockey.

His spiked hair earned him that unique nickname during his childhood and it has stayed with him, even making its presence felt as a tattoo on Manpreet's calf.

A maiden from Malaysia bowled him over at a pretty young age, but Manpreet's focus has never swayed. In fact, the midfielder from Jalandhar has gone from strength to strength and now even mentioned by some as India's next captain.

And that's not without a reason. The 23-year-old has always led India coming up the junior ranks, even at the Junior World Cup. But it was his game more than his stature as the leader that always kept him in the spotlight. That's what earned him the Asian Junior Player of the Year award as well.

The team man in Manpreet comes to the fore whenever needed the most. Be it saving the team from a French embarrassment with a drag-flick goal, stepping into the shoes of Sardar and marshal troops from the centre of the field or falling back to fortify as a defender, Manpreet is that unique peg which fits every hole. In short, a captain's delight.

The latest among Manpreet's playing-out-of-your-skin efforts sprouted at the Hockey World League (HWL) Final in Raipur, where India huffed, puffed and finally laughed with a bronze medal on the chest - first in 33 years at a global event. And coming at the cost of world No. 2 Netherlands after being 0-2 down sweetened the success that much more.

Manpreet, the 'Player of the Final', played that game like a man possessed and was the difference between the Dutch and Indian midfield, save for those last two minutes when the visitors hushed the crowd to draw level at 5-5 before the hosts came back to win via a nervous shootout.

There couldn't have been a better way to end 2015, and there can't be a better man than Manpreet himself to tell how the team turned it around and what the fans can expect in the Olympic year.

You have cemented your place in the senior team and now seen as one of the strongest pillars in the midfield. How do you look back at your learning days, especially now when you are about to play your second Olympics?

I don't think I am very strong. All I try to do is give my 100 per cent whenever on the field. In the last two years, I have played with top players in the Hockey India League (HIL). That's where I have learned a lot sharing space with players like Moritz Fuerste, Ashley Jackson and Barry Middleton.

A medal at a major FIH event after 33 years. Are you still asking yourself 'is it a dream?' How did the team celebrate?

It was a historic moment for Indian hockey to win a medal after such a long time. We had a small team celebration after we won the bronze in Raipur. It was quite a big achievement for us because we beat the world No. 2 team (Netherlands).

India played like two different teams. Except against Germany, we didn't play well at the pool stage but in the knockouts we were brilliant. Did the team change anything in terms of strategy?

We messed up somewhat in the opening game against Argentina. But we then had video sessions where we noticed and tried to put a stop on all the mistakes we did. The team got together and made it a point not to repeat those mistakes in the knockout phase. So to improve from there and finish on the podium, I think we did a good job.

Do you think India deserved to play the final in Raipur, because we lost by just 1-0 to Belgium in the semis?

Certainly we deserved to play the final. We gave our all in the semi-final but may be luck was not on our side as we came close to scoring so many times. We made a lot of raids into the Belgian striking circle, created a lot of chances but unfortunately we couldn't avail the opportunities that came our way in that game.

Though we won bronze, there were still areas of concern. We were 5-3 up against the Netherlands with just two minutes left, but we couldn't hold the ball to kill time and allowed them to score two goals. What was the problem there?

We failed to keep possession in the dying stages of that game. The Dutch team earned two penalty corners due to our silly mistakes, which allowed them to equalise at 5-5. We should have concentrated on ball control at that time, but we failed to do that.

Apart from that, there are weaknesses that you don't want to see in an international team - like poor trapping in the opposition circle, soft mistakes in defence and conceding late goals. Does this frustrate Oltmans? What's his reaction when the team returns to the bench during breaks in a match?

It was not that much, and it certainly wasn't the case that only the Indian team was committing such mistakes; players in the other teams too were making similar errors. At times Roelant did get frustrated, especially for the goal-scoring chances we were missing. But overall, he used to remain positive, trusted us and believed that we can do it. Whenever we used to go back during half-time or during mini breaks after each quarter, he always used to egg us on to give your best.

Mis-trapping is an old problem for Indian forwards, due to which we have lost matches that we should have won. What's your personal opinion on this?

My personal opinion is that I don't think we committed too many mistakes. At times, we did miss chances we should have scored off, but overall I think the team did very well.

Most teams in Raipur were not at their full strength and some key players will join them for Olympics. Do you think it helped India finish on the podium?

We didn't focus on the strengths of our opponents. We were playing to our own plan. But top teams like Australia, Argentina and Belgium were almost at full strength in Raipur. One or two players may be missing, but these teams had most of their first-choice players. We did what we had to do without worrying about others, which is why we finished on the podium.

Rio is going to be you second Olympics after a poor last-place finish in London 2012. How do you see the team's preparations this time?

We are doing a lot of hard work. We did well in the HWL Final, and we have time on hand [before the Olympics in August 2016]. There is a lot of improvement and confidence in the team. So I feel we will do a lot better than London.

Olympics and World Cup are the two biggest tournaments for a hockey player. Is there some special preparation needed, especially on the mental level?

These two are the most important events for any hockey player. We have gone through a lot of psychological sessions in the past and it will continue as we prepare ourselves mentally getting closer to the Rio Games. Hockey India and SAI (Sports Authority of India) has provided us with a psychologist. We have had sessions with her, also before the HWL Final. So it's not just the physical aspect of it that we need to focus on.

You have played at almost every position in the last one year, including as a central midfielder in place of Sardar. Are you a floating player for the team or has Oltmans assigned you a fixed position now?

Roelant has told me that I will play in the midfield only - right, central or left - because he feels I can be at my best in that part of the pitch.

Not long ago you scored on a penalty corner in the absence of Raghu and Rupinder. Are you still the team's third flicker or is it Jasjit Singh Kular?

We have three drag-flickers, but whenever the team needs me, I step up to give it my 100 percent, as I have already said. Whenever I am needed in any situation, my thought process is to help the team come out on top with my efforts.

Final question. Looking at the performances until now, what do you think will be a respectable position for India to finish at the Rio Olympics?

Right now, at this moment, we are not thinking about positions. We are still in preparation mode for the Olympics. Once the competition arrives, we will take it match by match, and the target always is to first qualify for the top four and then take it from there.

Three Muslim musicians playing Christmas carols is the best thing you will see today

9:55 AM Rajsamand Blog 0 Comments

This has got to be best and the warmest wish of this season. TATA Sky's latest ad has three Muslim musicians playing Christmas carols like 'Rudolph, The Red Nose Reindeer' and 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas' beautifully on the Mandolin, the Esraj and the Rabaab. The group of three are sufi artists and go by the name of 'Strings for Humanity'. They are seen seated in a room full of candles. The candles are symbolic to other's faith and religion. The video ends with the message 'Don't lose faith in humanity just yet'. The video comes at a time where the entire country is debating about the growing intolerance that is prevailing the country as well as in the world at large. A simple message with a beautiful video just warms up the heart.

Modi takes a jibe at his detractors, says some people only cry about problems

9:51 AM Rajsamand Blog 0 Comments

Moscow: In an apparent swipe at his detractors back home, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said some people only cry about problems while his government was trying to resolve them.

"Yes we also face problems but we are not those who will only cry about the problems. We are finding solutions to the problems we face.

"There are some people who all the time are engaged in counting problems," he said while addressing a 'Friends of India' event in Moscow.

Asserting that India is making attempts to resolve these problems, he said ,"results in this direction are now showing".

While Modi did not elaborate, he was apparently referring to problems being repeatedly highlighted by Opposition parties.

His remarks to a gathering of about 3,000 against the backdrop of the NDA government's attack on the opposition for stalling the crucial reforms legislations like the GST during the just concluded Parliament session.

The Prime Minister who spoke about the growing threat of terrorism underlined the need for the global community to join hands to fight the menace.

He recalled that 30 years back when India, a victim of terrorism, pressed the international community to act against the scourge, the world was not convinced.

"But the world has now been shaken with the brutality of terrorism striking in different parts with impunity. India has now been successful in convincing the world that it is the demand of time that all forces which believe in humanism should join hands to root out terrorism," he said.
Describing India-Russia relations as "deep-rooted", he said that Russia has stood like a rock behind India in hours of crisis and also at the international fora on various issues.

He said strengthening of bilateral relations will help the two countries emerge as a new power in Central Asia and Eurasia will be a catalyst for economic development of the region.

On His 91st Birthday Here Are 7 Achievements Of Atal Bihari Vajpayee That We Should Never Forget

4:17 AM Rajsamand Blog 0 Comments

It is hard to debate that Atal Bihari Vajpayee was arguably India’s best PM. Just look at the other recent names – there’s Indira Gandhi who couldn’t let go of power (and resorted to an Emergency to hold on to it), and Manmohan Singh (nothing needs to be said).

As the nation celebrates his 91st birthday, we feel it's only right to share this quick list of his legacy and achievements for those who need a history lesson.

1. He scripted the DNA for the Right To Education.

If you think the Right To Education was exclusively a Congress achievement, here's a shocker - it was Vajpayee who created its foundation with the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, which made education for children aged 6 to 14 years a fundamental right.

2. He made India a nuclear weapon state.

"We have the capacity for a big bomb now. Ours will never be weapons of aggression."
Atal Bihari Vajpayee

This was in 1998, when India had conducted 5 Indian nuclear tests in one week. As we have seen with our strange love-hate relationship with Pakistan, nuclear weapon capability is a powerful bargaining chip.

3. He was behind our telecom success story.
Here’s a photo of celebration at Pokhran after the testing. In the photo, you can see (from left) Vajpayee, George Fernandes, Abdul Kalam, and R. Chidambaram. However, Vajpayee understood the ills of nuclear weaponry, and presented his feeling in a poem, Hiroshima Ki Peeda (Hiroshima's Pain), after seeing Japan’s Ground Zero.

4. He maintained a strong GDP growth during his time.
The Congress would have us believe that Rajiv Gandhi brought the telecom revolution to India. Rahul Gandhi even said this at a rally, “You got mobile phones because Rajiv Gandhi heard you." A decade after Rajiv Gandhi left office, our tele-density grew from a 0.6% (1989) to 2.8% in 1999 - not exactly a revolution. On the other hand, Vajpayee's New Telecom Policy (NTP) led to a telecom penetration rate rise from below 3% (1999) to over 70% in October 2012. Don't believe us? Columbia University’s Professor Arvind Panagariya also gives Vajpayee due credit for his role in ramping up our telecom success story in his book .

5. He improved our international relationships extensively.
During his time, India saw a devastating earthquake (2001), two cyclones (1999 and 2000), the worst drought in thirty years (2002-2003), Gulf War II and an oil crisis from 2003, the Kargil conflict of 1999, and a Parliament attack. Yet, our GDP didn't falter during his time.

- Improved trade ties and attempted to resolve territorial disputes with the
People's Republic of ChinaTake a look at a few of Vajpayee's achievements:

- Strategic and military cooperation with Israel
- With the 2000 Bill Clinton visit (the first US President to visit India since Jimmy Carter), there was a thaw in India's Cold War-era distant relationship with America, leading to improved trade and cooperation
Vajpayee was among the first passengers on the inaugural Delhi-Lahore Bus which established road connectivity between India and Pakistan for the first time since 1947

6. He approved the Delhi Metro Project.

While the Sheila Dixit government likes to tell us it brought what is possibly India's best mass transit public transport system, that is not true! The Delhi Metro project was approved, and the first line inaugurated, by Atal Bihari Vajpayee. He boarded the first line at Kashmiri Gate, en-route Seelampur

7. He sent India to the moon.

Our country is now ready to fly high in the field of science. I am pleased to announce that India will send her own spacecraft to the moon by 2008. It is being named Chandrayaan-1"
56th Indian Independence Day, August 15 2003

He passed the Chandrayan-1 project. As we have seen from ISRO's amazing achievements, this clearly set the tone for india

Ishan Kishan is a mixture of MS Dhoni and Adam Gilchrist

7:27 AM Rajsamand Blog 0 Comments

When India’s under-19 squad will travel to Bangladesh for the World Cup, the team’s reins will be in the hands of 17-year-old Ishan Kishan.

The wicketkeeper-batsman from Patna, Bihar, was picked as the leader of a breed of cricketers who are expected to form the core of the senior team in the years to come. With players like Yuvraj Singh and Virat Kohli crediting their claim to fame to the under-19 days, Ishan has all the reasons to feel proud about leading a group that includes the likes of prolific batsman Armaan Jaffer and allrounder Sarfaraz Khan.

News 18 talked to Ishan’s elated family and coach after his selection for the prestigious tournament.

Dhoni and Gilchrist are his idols

Just 17, Ishan idolises Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Adam Gilchrist, since he is of the same wicketkeeper-batsman ilk and bats left-handed like the Australian great. “You can call him a mixture of Dhoni and Gilchrist. In front of the stumps, he bats like Gilchrist while behind he is as firm as Dhoni,” said his coach Santosh Kumar.

Likes to take on spinners

Ishan believes in taking on the spinners. “His foot work against spinners is impeccable, which you see with all successful batsmen. Besides hitting the ball out of the park, Ishan is very fond of playing the pull shot,” Santosh told News 18.

He likes to open

Before leading Team India, Ishan has led his school and club teams as well. Besides keeping wickets, he opens the batting; and after negotiating the pace bowlers, he likes to up the ante against slow bowlers, especially spinners.

This is not the first World Cup for Ishan

Ishan has previously led his school team at the School World Cup in Aligarh when he was just seven. His coach from his early days in cricket, Santosh said, “During that School World Cup, Ishan’s team travelled till the Super-8 stage before making an exit.”

Supportive Family

Ishan’s family has a special role in making him a cricketer. “Right from his childhood, we never stopped Ishan from playing or watching cricket. Accompanying elder brother Raj to cricket grounds, when Ishan decided to become a cricket we never came to know. Raj also always appreciated and pushed his efforts,” said proud father, Pranav Pandey, who is a builder by profession.

But mother was always worried

Only Ishant’s mother was slightly annoyed with his cricket. “Because cricketers from Bihar never had a bright future, it made his mother worried. But when he switched to Jharkhand with his own efforts, the mother’s worries as well as annoyance disappeared,” said Ishan’s father.

A friend suggested him to leave Bihar

Learning his cricket on the streets of Patna, today Ishan plays for Jharkhand as well as Team India. Before Bihar Cricket Association’s registration issues with the BCCI and Bihar politics could affect his cricket, one of Ishan’s seniors advised him to play for Jharkhand instead. And he has never looked back since, now playing for Jharkhand for three years.

Had to leave school for cricket

Like many successful cricketers, Ishan too faced difficult in managing both studies and cricket. His father and coach said because of short attendance he had to leave a good school like the Delhi Public School (DPS). “But despite being forced to quit his school, Ishan didn’t stop playing cricket,” they said. Currently Ishan is a student of XIth standard in Patna’s College of Commerce.

Ishan will never ignore playing for Jharkhand

The proud family understands how big a role Jhakhand has played in their son’s rise as a cricketer. Relatives and neighbours have joined in the success parties at Ishan’s home, but everyone believes he will never ignore playing for Jharkhand despite being India Under-19 captain.

A big brother’s sacrifice

The elder brother, who held his sibling’s hand to cricket grounds, sacrificed his own cricket ambitions to promote his brother. Talking to News 18, Raj, who is now studying medicine, said: “Of the two of us, only could pursue cricket, so I felt it’s better to support and promote Ishan because he showed a lot of promise and today fulfilled it by becoming an India captain.”

BMW faces $40 million fine for being too slow in fixing cars

2:04 AM Rajsamand Blog 0 Comments

US safety regulators have slapped German automaker BMW AG with a $40 million penalty for moving too slowly to fix Mini brand cars that failed federal crash tests.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also said Monday BMW failed to send the agency accurate recall information.

According to a consent order signed by the company, BMW must pay $10 million in cash and spend $10 million on steps to get into compliance. Another $20 million in fines must be paid if BMW doesn't comply or commits other safety violations.

BMW agreed to take steps to make sure that the violations don't happen again, the agency said in a statement. The company said the consent order is for two years, with NHTSA having the right to extend it for a third.

It's the second fine against BMW in three years for similar problems. The agency fined BMW $3 million in 2012.

"The requirement to launch recalls and inform consumers in a timely fashion when a safety defect or noncompliance is discovered is fundamental to our system for protecting the traveling public. This is a must-do," NHTSA Administrator Mark Rosekind said in the statement.

The order resolves an investigation that began in September into whether BMW notified NHTSA within the legally required five days of finding out that 2014 and 2015 Mini Cooper models failed to meet side-impact crash standards.

According to NHTSA, a Mini two-door Hardtop Cooper failed an agency crash test in October 2014, and BMW responded by saying that the car was listed with an incorrect weight rating and would pass at the proper weight. Lighter cars face less-stringent crash tests.

BMW agreed to a recall to fix the weight rating label on the cars, and to do a service campaign, which is short of a recall, to add side-impact protection.

But in July of this year, NHTSA did a second crash test at the corrected weight rating, and the Mini failed again. Then the agency found out that BMW never did the service campaign to bolster side-impact protection.

In the consent order with the agency, BMW acknowledged that it didn't do the recall quickly enough, according to NHTSA. The company also acknowledged moving too slowly to notify owners and dealers of other recalls since it was fined in 2012, NHTSA said.

The BMW penalty caps the first year in office for Rosekind, who has made the agency more aggressive in enforcing auto safety laws since taking over last December in the midst of the General Motors ignition switch scandal.

Earlier in the year, the agency fined Fiat Chrysler twice for failing to report safety violations and for failing to tell the agency about deaths and injuries involving its vehicles. The total penalty against the company is $175 million, although Fiat Chrysler can avoid much of it by complying with the agency's demands.
NHTSA also fined air bag maker Takata Corp. $70 million, with the potential to grow to $200 million, for concealing evidence that air bag inflators can explode with too much force and hit people with shrapnel.

Last year General Motors was fined $35 million by the government for concealing the problem ignition switches in older small cars such as the Chevrolet Cobalt. The faulty switches, which are responsible for at least 169 deaths and scores of injuries, can slip out of the run position, shutting down the engine and disabling power steering and air bags. The automaker also agreed to pay a $900 million penalty to the Justice Department to settle criminal charges in the case.

Facebook adds support for Apple Live Photos feature

1:58 AM Rajsamand Blog 0 Comments

New York: The latest iPhones come with the ability to turn still images into video — just like magic — but sharing options had been limited to other Apple apps.

That's changing as Facebook, one of the leading forums for photo sharing, adds Apple's Live Photos feature to Facebook's iPhone and iPad app. Facebook will start offering it Monday to a limited number of users initially, with a broader rollout planned in the coming weeks. Facebook's support follows a similar move by Yahoo's Tumblr service.

With Live Photos on the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus, every still shot is accompanied by a three-second video, with sound. For instance, you can snap a shot of your kid blowing out birthday candles — and get video showing the flame going out as everyone sings "Happy Birthday."

The phone automatically records video in the background when the camera app is open. The recording is immediately discarded if you do nothing. When you snap a shot, the phone saves a second and a half of video leading to that shot and continues recording until you get three seconds in all.

Why not just take video? You might not know ahead of time when you'll encounter a scene lending itself to video. With Live Photos, you always get the video option — unless you turn the feature off.

But sharing had been limited to certain Apple apps — such as the texting app Messages, but not Mail.

With tools Apple is making available to third parties, sharing can now be done through Facebook and Tumblr, too. Your friend merely needs to tap and hold the photo to watch the image animate. The iPhone 6s models are required for creating Live Photos, but viewing can also be done on older iPhones and iPads with the latest operating system. On Android and Web browsers, you get only the still images.

Besides Facebook and Tumblr, Getty Images is also offering a selection of Live Photos through its app. It's a curated selection, though, rather than a mechanism for sharing photos with friends.

IITian Manu Prakash's cheap, portable microscope could revolutionise global health

1:52 AM Rajsamand Blog 0 Comments

New Delhi: Inspired by microscopist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek's work with microscopes, an Indian-origin biophysicist named Manu Prakash has also developed his own handy, foldable microscope that has the potential to possibly change the face of global health.

Prakash, an IIT alumnus, has his own laboratory at the Stanford University's bioengineering department and is known for having invented the Foldscope- a printable, use-and-throw microscope that is made almost entirely from a sheet of paper.

The Foldscope kit includes paper that is printed with botanical illustrations and perforated with several shapes which can be punched out and with a series of origami-style folds that could be woven together into a single unit.

According to The New Yorker, the microscope is about the size of a bookmark and its lens- a speck of plastic provides a 140 times magnification. There is also a second lens which is of higher magnification that comes with a set of stick-on magnets which are used to attach a smartphone to the microscope for easy recording of a sample through the phone's camera.

While the Foldscope performs most of the functions of a high-school lab microscope, its parts cost less than a dollar. Prakash, along with some of his graduate students have also launched theFoldscope Explore website where recipients of the kits can share images, videos, commentary about exploring the device.

Prakash and his chief collaborator on the project, Jim Cybulski, plan to make the Foldscope available especially to people who live without electricity or modern sanitation, and who have likely never observed the microcosmos directly.

He says, "There’s a very deep connection between science education and global health. Unless you get people curious about the small-scale world, it’s very hard to change mind-sets about diseases."

कोर्ट का बड़ा फैसला- सामूहिक दुष्कर्म के सात दोषियों को हुई

1:10 AM Rajsamand Blog 0 Comments
