What is Andhra Pradesh's 'call money sex' racket

Andhra Pradesh has been rocked by the 'call money sex' scandal which has seen a lot of political leaders being dragged into it. There have been allegations that many Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders are involved in the racket.

But what is a call money scam?

Call money is a loan racket and is very big in several parts of Andhra Pradesh including Vijayawada.

The people who are desperate for money can make a call to the local lenders. Lenders reach home of the caller with money and take signature on some papers and might take even signed blank cheques.

The interest rates are exorbitant and can be as high as 200-300%. The racket is estimated to be worth over Rs 2000 crore.

In the present call money sex allegation a woman who took Rs 1.5 lakh as loan but was made to pay Rs 6 lakh.

The loan sharks allegedly pushed hundreds of women into flesh trade after they failed to repay the loan with exorbitant interests. The racket became public after a woman complained.
Most of those who patronise the call money racket are allegedly ruling TDP MLAs and other local leaders.

Andhra Pradesh's main opposition YSR Congress Party has been demanding Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's resignation following the allegations. Naidu has already ordered and inquiry.
