Vijender beats Hyuseinov via Technical Knockout to win his third bout in a row
It was the first time that ace Indian boxer Vijender Singh was fighting in a six-round bout and his opponent this time was a ‘veteran’ of 14 bouts. But the bout at the Manchester Arena on Saturday ended before most of viewers would tune their television sets to STAR Sports 4.
Not even a minute into the second round and Vijender was the champion. He landed a flurry of quick punches on his Bulgarian counterpart Samet Hyuseinov. His opponent fell down and it also ended his will power to rise again and fightback. The referee stopped the bout. Samet was a loser, Vijender a winner. It was a Technical Knockout in the Indian’s favour.
With it, Vijender maintained his record of 100 per cent victory, having beaten Britons Sonny Whiting and Dean Gillen, also knockouts.
Before the bout, Samet was bragging a lot about his experience in the pro circuit and power to pulvarise the Indian. He dismissed Vijender’s illustrious record in amateur ranks saying the Indian is good only as an actor-boxer and his fans will be disappointed after watching him lose the bout badly. But in the bout, it was just the opposite.
As soon as the first round started, Samet looked completely defensive. His body language never suggested that he was there to fight, let alone beat the Indian convincingly. Vijender, in contrast, gauged his opponent by landing some soft blows. Watching Samet making no effort in retaliating, Vijender gained in confidence. He started landing jabs every now and then. The first round ended with the Indian seemingly taking the honours.
It was surprising that instead of fighting. Samet looked in a hurry to pack things up in the second round and Vijender fast-tracked the process. Samet, a boxer who had fought in bouts up to eight rounds, was finished even before the second round ended.
After the fight, Vijender said he was happy for another knockout win and making it 3-0. "Attacking strategy on Samet from the very first minute of the first round helped me a lot to win this game in the second round. For my third bout I have done a lot of physical hardwork and have improved my technique also which helped to win today’s game against an opponent who has experience of playing 14 bouts.
Vijender also said that he was confident to beat his opponent and this win was a Christmas gift for all Indians."I was confident to beat him. My win is a Christmas gift for all my Indian friends and fans and I am feeling happy that i ended year on a winning note."
"Before my bout everyone was asking me that your opponent speaks a lot about giving you tough time in the ring but I think now my punches have replied to him and it will be lesson for future opponents also," he added.
Earlier, Vijender entered the ring in style, with song ‘Singh is King’ being played in the background. It looked that he turned the song into reality post bout.
Though Vijender’s all three rivals had pro boxing experience, they never appeared matching the Indian in any department of skills. Vijender has fought in much better bouts during the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, World Championships and the Olympics. It will be interesting to see the day he meets a rival of his capabilities.
For now, Vijender can celebrate Christmas Day and New Year happily.
